But since the log on password to the protected area is the serial number â€" double the length of those few phone numbers I have spent years to remember, I'd love to see a "Remember me" feature on the log on screen.

I use Opera which has built in site password tracking so that works well for me.

I thought long and hard about allowing the changing of passwords (and even user names). in the end it is easier for the tracking and integration of customers between the systems in place. You see, it is not just this forum that is affected. There is an overriding membership software package that handles the access to various directories on the server and that software also integrates to the SMF forum software (when a user is added, changed, deleted from the membership software then the same automatically happens in the forum software). Likewise, I have another piece of software on the server that handles the mailing list.

Maybe down the road we can look at changing the passwords.

Both Opera and FireFox have a feature to log you in automatically... works great!

If that is the case then wouldn't the cookie that a "remember me" would use would also be on the USB stick? Not sure yet if the cookie would use any type of encryption.... I'll know tonight.

Cookies are normally not readable although I don't think any (strong) "encryption" is implemented in the concept. They should not store the password itself but simply a value/code to indicate that log-on has been approved.

Because I use several "same-level-services" around the net, I use the same password for several of these â€" thus "loosing" it will create a lot of work to change ...

If you direct link to this forum (which you probably shouldn't because you miss out on the information in the Members Area webpage), you will most likely be presented with a login form. That login form is part of the aMember software that I use to control access to various parts of the site. It is not the prettiest form in the world but it is certainly functional. I have modifed the code for the form so that it is a little more informative than it was (e.g. using the phrase "Serial Number" instead of "Password", etc...).

Edit: For clarity, since making this post, we no longer have the members only web page. After logging in, you now go straight to the forums. Everything FF3 related will be posted in these forums.

PB also wants us to enter by the front door, but I rarely do. I guess it happens more new/frequent stuff/content in the forums than on the main page. The only thing I've been missing out on is being in the first bunch to see a new release â€" but someone always wants to be the one to tell us "slackers" anyway ... 8o)
